“The Ts’Peten Denfence Committee is calling on everyone to come join us on, September 11th to mark 21 years since the brutal attack on the Ts’Peten Defenders at the 1995 Gustafsen Lake Standoff that happened in Secwepemc Territory. Our War Hero and Leader, our late esteemed Elder Wolverine, called for a Federal Inquiry into the Gustafsen Lake Standoff and the brutal force used against himself and other Indigenous land defenders. In honour and to commemorate Wolverine, we continue his legacy and the work he wanted us to continue doing. So this is why we call on you to come and stand with us on this day to Commemorate the stand our Warriors took for us at Gustafsen Lake, to honour their courage and bravery. Come stand with us to DEMAND A FEDERAL INQUIRY INTO THE GUSTAFSEN LAKE STANDOFF!
*** FOOD WILL BE SERVED, PLEASE BRING YOUR HAND DRUMS, CHILDREN, FAMILY AND YOUR SIGNS AND BANNERS! LET’S MAKE SOME NOICE AND BUILD SOME SOLID COMMITMENTS TO FORGE FORWARD.
21 years ago, in 1995, after over a century’s worth of attempts to have Secwepemc sovereignty respected, including visits to England and letters written to theFederal government, the RCMP initiated a 31 day siege against the Secwepemc Peoples as they took a stand against the desecration and dispossession of Sacred Sundance Grounds at Ts’Peten/Gustafsen Lake in so called British Columbia.
The 1995 Gustafsen Lake Standoff as it is known, if it is known, to you, was the largest military assault in Canadian history. Over 450 RCMP and military officers, armoured Personnel Carriers mounted with .50 calibre machine guns, land mines and 77,000 rounds of ammunition were deployed against us. The RCMP stated their murderous intentions in national media during the siege, openly boasting about bringing 18 body bags for the 18 Defenders barricaded by the RCMP into the camp. One of the defenders was 14 years old and pregnant at the time.”
